My Thoughts on the Derek Chauvin Trail

By: Charles A. Jackson Bey

The question was posed do I think George Floyd received Justice? And the answer is NO!!! And the reason I say this is due to the fact he is no longer alive! From his life coming to an end sooner than it should have. By a man who took an oath to Protect & Serve the community and the citizens that resides within that community.

The American people had to bear witness to a Ruthless Murder that was disputed by Chauvin’s defense Attorney as “Mr. Floyd having a bad heart”, “Mr. Floyd had drugs in his system that contributed to his death”! As the defense used every ploy they could to Discredit, Defame, and to Assassinate George Floyd’s character as if he was the criminal on trial. George Floyd was a man that had been a father, brother, and a son who called for his mother with the remaining breath in his body.

Justice would have been served if Mr. Floyd was alive & could have been treated with enough respect to be placed in custody & restrained in a proper police fashion without officer Chauvin leaving a knee on his neck for nearly ten minutes as he shows his disregard for human life.

Justice would have been served if the defense attorney would have never tried to defend such a man! But we all know that everyone has the right to a fair trial no matter how harsh a crime may be.

I don’t consider it Justice Served solely on the fact that the Jury found Derek Chauvin guilty on all charges! Because how many others were slain at the hands of a Police Officer within the last 20 years? And they never were even charged or even had all charges dismissed!

Which all Law Enforcement, Judges, Attorneys, & Prosecutors should and must be held to a higher standard when they violate the very oath they took. By receiving the highest charges or the maximum of a prison sentence due to the fact they are Government Officials that Govern Society and not let off so damn easy just because of their job description, title, or position.

That’s when Justice will be served! Until then we will keep witnessing senseless killings by Law Enforcement, Judges abuse of Discretion, Prosecutorial Misconduct, etc. Along with many other things that need to be addressed with America’s Justice System.

Because every time we see or hear in the media it’s Just Us not receiving Justice!!!

Power Within Us

We each have the ability to create, conquer, or give in to any thought that comes to our mind. And with each one of those abilities there is so much to consider. The mind is a beautiful place when it is filled with the right thoughts because what we think we tend to behave according to those thoughts. So I’m going to ask you this question that I always ask myself, “What are you telling yourself?” Are your thoughts uplifting, do they distract, make you want to keep going or are you telling yourself things that shred confidence? You may have never thought about these questions that I’m asking but it is vital that you do.

Words can influence a person’s progress, and be the very cause of a person making no strides at all. We see words more than anything else in one day and it is our choice what we take in and what we leave on the many screens of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or text. Have you ever thought about how the last words you read made you feel?
I used to believe that no one cared about me, that I was all by myself. No one said any of those words to me but I created them in my mind because it always seemed that way when that wasn’t the truth at all. I created those words and those words stopped me from letting people in who wanted to become a part of my life. I recognized that flaw in my thinking when I invited God into my world and asked Him to help me in every area of my life. When we stop trying to figure it all out and let God be God, He gives us new thoughts. Thoughts that first correct our person then He gives us the right tools in order to help us become better; think better.

If you are the person who has said while reading this, “I just don’t know how to change the way I think.” Then I want you to start with that very thought. When we think we can’t we don’t even look for a way, instead we give in to the way we have been processing which has been hindering so much of our life.

I want you to practice something, it’s something I do daily. When you feel like you are doing too much mentally I want you to STOP, regroup your thoughts then only let those thoughts that are positive or calming in. When we practice gaining control of how we think about real life stuff, we function better and it is in those moments that we will recognize the power that lives within us. The power over our thought life which plays one of the greatest roles in all of our days on this earth.

I want to leave you with this, (Prov 16:3) NKJV reads: Commit your works to the LORD, And your thoughts will be established.

On April 20, 2010 I went numb. I had to! Fight or flight….. I choose to survive.

Nothing about the system was just. No evidence, perjured testimony, a subterfuge case. I caught my breath as the judge said 32-50 years in prison for crimes I did not commit. When will I breathe again?

Sitting alone in my cell…. I found my God. My mom couldn’t carry me. My family didn’t understand. Friends disappeared shortly after the jury’s verdict read.

This time is serious. Not a moment to play. Freedom is the goal…. by any means necessary.

Courts not persuaded to grant relief??? Has anyone actually read the paperwork? Why do they keep saying I aided and abetted him whose case was dismissed, he was in jail on unrelated charges at the time of alleged offense? They convicted me of acting in collusion with him when prosecution knew his case had been dismissed. Fight or flight…. I will never give up!

It’s a rollercoaster ride for years. Twists, turns…… tic tic tic to the top to crash at the bottom repeatedly. I want off!

9-11-17 I got a court date. Excitement beyond words! Tic tic tic… appeal denied…. crash. Jailhouse lawyer scammed me. Filed bogus paperwork.

For 7 years I could only see the exit. Now I need to internalize to see how I got here.

Six months into my incarceration I lost my partner. We did get to talk days before, so I guess that was goodbye. One year in, my best friend died. Grandpa gone. Six months after that I lost my only brother. He came to see me Sunday and died Wednesday. Best visit ever and that was goodbye as well. Grandma hold on! I’m coming….. I’m fighting Grandma! I need you to fight too! Grandma didn’t make it either. All I have left is my Mom. She’s there alone and need me. Why can’t they just look? Read the file. See the lies. Let me go home. My Mom needs me! I barely breathe. Lumps in my throat. Fight or flight. I can’t do both. Body in shock. Wait… no…..I see a flicker of light. Fight! You gotta fight!

First and foremost, I would like to send my condolences to George Floyd’s family and friends as well as all those that lost their lives to senseless acts committed by law enforcement officers around the world. On May 25th, 2020, the whole world witnessed a modern day lynching of an unarmed black man in America, as onlookers pleaded for his life. One guilty verdict is not enough, yet we celebrate as if true justice has been served. Throughout the history of this so-called great nation, America has repeatedly shown us for centuries that Black Lives do not matter. With that being stated, I am waiting to see what will be handed down to Derek Chauvin on sentencing day and the appeal process.

However, there were so many mixed emotions developing in my mind as I watched the trial. During the Derek Chauvin trial, several unarmed black people were killed by police officers. Even after a verdict was reached, several more fatal cop shootings occurred in America. I thought about the topic for this article and I realize that we as the American people are no better than the officers that are pulling these triggers and committing these crimes, because we continue to allow this to happen as the unimaginable continues to repeat itself. Everyone should be held accountable for their actions. As a result, accountability is the first solution to this ongoing problem in America.

George Floyd – Sincere Change Must Be Made!

Greetings to everybody,

Q. We want to know if you think Justice was given to George Floyd?

No! Because Mr. Floyd should still be alive and officer Chauvin should’ve been arrested on the spot by his peers when he was asked, then told, to get off Floyd’s neck. Especially once Floyd stated he couldn’t breathe, I felt Chauvin showed he had no regard for George Floyd’s life once he was calling out for his Mom! Now, as far as the trial was and went, I can say George Floyd’s family may have gotten some Justice, because officer Chauvin was tried by 12 jurors of his peers and found guilty on all charges he was charged with. The people who witnessed Chauvin’s actions and the video for the world to see was self-explanatory within itself concerning the evidence against him. Long live George Floyd in Spirit, because he was one of many whom has died at the hands of predominately Caucasian/White Male officers!!!

PS: We should know that the ugliness of this country shouldn’t continue to go unnoticed. Sincere change must be made with Integrity, Honesty, and True Justice for All… Peace!

Mental Health Awareness

By: Joseph Green

[May was] Mental Health Awareness Month. This is also the month that my life changed forever. On May 29, 2007 I was falsely accused of a crime I did not commit. As a man who not only has dealt with and battled mental illness but who has also seen family and friends battle mental illness. I wanted to use my platform to bring awareness to the importance of mental health care. This month is meant to help destigmatize mental illness. At some point in our lives and for many reasons we all have battled some form of mental illness. Be it depression, anxiety or bipolar to name a few.

For years I have battled depression PTSD, and anxiety. I first experienced depression and anxiety when I was falsely accused and charged with a murder I did not commit. I know it’s not common to hear a man in prison speak so candid and be vulnerable about his mental status. In this moment I wanted to put away my pride to help remove the stigma. You never know who you may inspire with your story.

In 2013 my depression and anxiety got so bad that I thought about ending it all. I knew I needed help. I went and sought help from a doctor and found that it helped me to speak about my thoughts and emotions. I rely solely on my spiritual foundation and the tools given to me. I listen to music. I write and I meditate. I also allow my family and friends to be my support system.

I wanted to share my story in hopes of helping others. Please do not feel ashamed or embarrassed to speak to someone if you’re experiencing tough and dark days. Please don’t be afraid or too busy to help someone else. If you’re battling mental illness I want to strongly encourage you to seek help. No one is perfect and life isn’t perfect. We can’t allow the bad times to keep us down. My life was turned upside down and will never be same. However my perspective creates my reality and I see this as a blessing. My mental is stronger and better. This pandemic has affected so many of us, let’s remember that in these times we are tougher together then apart. Thank you for your time! 🙂

What [i]s JUSTICE? (And How Does It Look?)

By: Duval Newsome El #149982

Many of us look at the results of the Derek Chauvin trial and say: “Finally, Justice is given in a police killing of an unarmed Black man!” This being the case, why then do we still feel the dread of this happening again? Something is missing! If this was true JUSTICE, this dreadful feeling would be nonexistent. What then is JUSTICE, and how does it look?

There are two types of Justice (No! Not “Just-Us” and “Justice”). The One is “Divine JUSTICE” and the other is “Man-made, Conventional Justice.” (The latter, supposedly having its roots in the former.)

The Man-made, Conventional Justice delivered in the Derek Chauvin trial for murdering Mr. George Floyd, was Just. Why? Because it fit the crime. However, we cannot overlook the fact that when it comes to this Man-made, Conventional Justice being applied to “Minorities” in America … although “The Lady” is “Blindfolded” and holding “Balanced Scales” and “The Book”; there is no “Balanced Application” as “The Lady” seemed to be peaking when “Minorities” stand before her. Why? Because this Man-made, Conventional Justice System is riddled with flaws; ALL stemming from systemic racism!

The PEACE of any society, depends upon JUSTICE, Divine JUSTICE! The Divine Principle of JUSTICE is flawless! It is a self-applied Principle. Meaning: The people comprising a society, must be Just, Righteous, Fair Dealing and Good, to bring about PEACE. When people make the Divine Principle of JUSTICE their very own, there will never be a need to carry signs stating: “NO JUSTICE, NO PEACE!” (Somehow hoping to obtain JUSTICE from those responsible for the Injustice.) People make up the system & society; changing the hearts and minds therein, will produce a JUST(ice) System for all!

With nothing but time on my hand, I followed the Derek Chauvin trial very closely, from start to finish. There are two points of contention I wish to express here, as they relate to the Un-Just treatment I experienced 44-years ago (which continues) under this Man-made, Conventional Justice System.

1.) The testimony given that confirmed Derek Chauvin Un-Justly had his knee on Mr. Floyd’s neck for 9 minutes 29 seconds! As a direct result of a major flaw in this Man-made system of Justice, I have served 44-years of my life for First-Degree Felony Murder; a murder of which I was not present at during its commission.

44-years = 16,060-days; 16,060-days = 385,440-hours; 385,440-hours = 23,126,400-minutes; 23,126,400-minutes = 1,387,584,000-seconds!!! That’s how long the “Knee of Injustice” has been on my neck behind prison walls! If you divide 1,387,584, 000-seconds by 569-seconds (9:29), you’ll come up with 2,438,636! This would be how many times I would’ve suffered the Un-Just treatment Derek Chauvin administered to George Floyd that caused his death.

2.) There was also testimony at the Chauvin trial by a Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter confirming that MMA fighters “Tap Out” from a strangulation choke hold within 3-5 seconds. Dividing 1,387,584,000-seconds by 5-seconds, you get: 277,516,800. Which means over my 44-years of Un-Just confinement, under the “Knee of Injustice”, I would have “Tapped Out” 277,516,800 times!!!

I ask you … Is this JUSTICE for a 19-year old, who was not even present at the scene of the murder of which he was convicted? HOW MANY TIMES WOULD I HAVE UTTERED: “I CAN’T BREATHE!!!”

Topic: My personal thoughts on the trial of Derek Chauvin; and if I think justice was given to George Floyd?

The guilty verdict in the Derek Chauvin murder trial triggered an out pouring of emotions and a sense of relief among Afrikan (Black people) who watched the trial on their t.v.

This trial was the latest in a disheartening series of police-involved killings of unarmed Afrikan (Black) men and women by white cops that we all feared, like other police-involved killings of unarmed Afrikan (Black) men and women, that Derek Chauvin would be found not guilty and walk free leaving Afrikans (Black People) angry, frustrated and disappointed again.

There was justice given to George Floyd only by holding Derek Chauvin “Accountable” of a deliberated gruesome murder graining every ounce of breath from George Floyd body with his knee on George Floyd’s neck for over nine (9) minutes; but no true justice can be given to George Floyd’s family for the loss of a brother, father, uncle, etc… A human life is priceless!!!

The primary objective of meditation is to strengthen awareness. The natural extension of meditation in daily life is “mindfulness”. Very often in daily life our consciousness drifts to conversations and events of the past or hopes and fears of the future. Mindfulness in my estimation is a steadfast effort to remain in the PRESENT however, mindfulness can only be achieved when one has cultivated peace of mind, therefore CALM is the captain that will steer the ship to its ultimate destination.

My life experiences have taught me that prayer, introspection, and watchfulness are prerequisite requirements for cultivating true peace of mind. When practicing meditation we are instructed to watch our thoughts without judgement or engagement, it’s advised to take on the attitude of an unbiased silent observer. This is a very difficult practice but one that is most important. When you find yourself judging or engaging your thoughts, calmly bring your attention back to “watchfulness” and carry on. Do not be disappointed with yourself, do not beat yourself up, do not strain yourself, sincere effort is the only requirement.

There’s a great deal that can be said regarding the short and long term benefits of this great practice however (so that I stay on subject) let it suffice to inform the practitioner that this practice is strengthening their mental and emotional awareness. Being watchful of your thoughts and emotions should be practiced in every aspect of your daily life. With time, effort and patience your strengthened awareness will begin to transform all of your undesirable traits that rob you of peace of mind. There will be many occasions throughout the course of your day when your attention drifts and you internally lose focus of your best self, this is natural and forgivable :), carry on!

At the end of your day practice introspection. “Allow all of the events of the day to pass through your mind”. Make a special note of the times when you should have thought better, spoken better or did better, this is in regards to dealing with others and yourself. Stop complaining and being overly critical of others (obviously there are times when stating your grievance is warranted) therefore I am not speaking of those serious instances however, here’s a question. Are you aware of how much you complain throughout the course of your day? Here’s a practice to help strengthen your awareness/mindfulness: throughout the course of the day begin keeping count of how many times you complain about something you could have calmly overlooked or peacefully accepted, even if the complaint only happens in your thoughts, count it! This practice should be extended especially to being judgmental or harshly critical of others. There are few things worse that rob the soul of its goodness than that of always seeing the bad in others!

Meditation is much more than closing your eyes for a few minutes watching thoughts or counting breaths, it is the noble spiritual discipline of purifying your thoughts and feelings. You can’t command the mind to be still if you have a troubled heart. The practice and ultimate attainment of mindfulness is a PROCESS. The road is long, the walk arduous, but the journey is beautiful 🙂

Praise GOD!
