“JUST BECAUSE THEY STAND NEXT TO YOU DOESN’T MEAN THEY WANT THE BEST FOR YOU AND JUST BECAUSE THEY SMILE IN YOUR FACE DOESN’T MEAN THEY’RE COMPLEMENTING YOU BEHIND YOUR BACK”
By: Joseph Green
This quote stood out to me because as I look back over my life those who I thought would be standing by my side are long gone or never showed up in the first place. I was once told when I was younger that if I ever go to jail I would find out who my real friends were. That cliché statement was so true. After 14 years of enduring this unfortunate situation I’ve come to find out who my real friends are. These are men and women have supported me on all aspects and never wavered. They have helped me maintain a healthy mental space. They have helped me to stay financially above water. They have been my arm and legs to still perform task for my family and to stay connected. They have always stayed in contact to make sure I was doing okay.
This quote also applies to the stress a person carries in this environment. You surround yourself around men who stand next to you but really don’t care about you. Trust is a very important aspect in this environment but it’s something that is seldom given. You always have to think about the intentions and motives of a person standing next to you. You have to question why they are making the moves they are making and what part do you play in their plans. However you can meet some great men in here who will be a part of your journey for the rest of your life. Men who will push you to your true potential and greatness.
We must teach our children and youth the importance of fostering the right groups of friends. No one makes it through life alone so it’s important that we pick the right people to accompany us on this journey. I have since made a host of new friends both inside and outside of prison. These people have made it possible for me to start a blog and website. They have helped to bring awareness to my case in hopes of having me exonerated. I now see the world in a new perspective because for most of the new friends I have acquired none come from the streets like me. Yet they have been able to see me for me despite my past. I surround myself with like-minded people whose vision is to help others.
Real friends are those who stand by you in the good and bad times. These are the people you yearn to help. You push them to see their potential. Real friends are not afraid to say your wrong and a real friend doesn’t take it personal when you say they are wrong. You see real friends add value and positivity to your life. We are the CEO’s of our lives so never be afraid to promote and demote people.
I want to say THANK YOU to everyone who has supported me during my darkest hour. Being in prison not only affects me but also those on the journey with me. We have to trust that Allah has the best plan for me and that in the end I will be free and living a happy life. Salute and see everyone soon 🙂
